You may be wondering, like many others, if it is possible for an individual to become AdWords certified. The answer: Yes, it is definitely possible.
Here are the basic steps you can follow to become a Google AdWords certified individual:
1. Have a Google Account
The first step in any Google-related certification is to have a registered Google account. If you do not have one, you can follow this link and quickly set one up.
You’ll notice that this will also provide you with a Gmail address which is automatically linked to the account, but you can also link a non-Gmail address to your account. All you need to do in that case is:
- Log into your Google account
- Go into your “Personal info & privacy” settings
- Select “Your personal info” and add an ‘alternate email’ in your advanced email settings

2. Join Google Partners
Once you have your Google account set up and linked to an email address that you check regularly, the next step is to join Google Partners.
While you are logged in on the account you want to use for your AdWords certification (and this should be the only account you are logged into), go to the Google Partners page. From here all you need to do is select the “Join Google Partners” tab and then click on the “Join Now” button.
Doing that will take you to a page with the terms of service which you need to go through and accept, and then you are officially a part of Google Partners.
3. Sign up for Academy for Ads
Once you have completed your profile you can move on to setting up an Academy for Ads account. The Academy is where you will go through the process of achieving your certification for the various aspects of Google AdWords advertising.
Simply sign up here with your Google Account so that everything is linked the way it should be, and then review and update your profile with your relevant details (such as your language, time zone, and whether you want to receive information from Academy for Ads).
4. Choose your exams
Now that you have all of the necessary accounts, you need to decide on your ideal learning path. On top of the compulsory AdWords Fundamentals assessment, you will need to choose one other advertising assessment from the following:
- Search Advertising
- Display Advertising
- Mobile Advertising
- Video Advertising
- Shopping Advertising
Once you’ve decided on one of these, you can begin studying. When you pass the exams for both AdWords Fundamentals and your chosen area of advertising, you are officially certified.
5. Renew your certification annually
All certifications will remain valid for 12 months after passing the assessment. So, if you passed your assessments in March of this year, you will need to retake the assessment for both the Fundamentals and your chosen field of advertising in March the following year.
